Why are more people adopting double barrelled names these days? Is it a form of snobbery?
Answers: i don't care
no ,it sounds good.
Just people trying to sound important I think. Bit silly really.
all the shot gun weddings
No I think they do it as a revolt!! Why when a women gets married should she take a man's name. Is her name any less important. I think not!! That is why people take on double barrell names!! Because it is only fair that you share your name with you wife/husband!!
a lot of couples aren't married and so the kids have both parent s names
In part it is a bit of snobbery, but also these days a lot of women when getting married do not wish to give up completely their maiden name so include it in their children's names
i don't think its snobbery, but i think its more to do with not offending either families , so when a child is born it has a link to both sides, and in theory, makes for a more stable upbringing
dont think so! i think its just the fashion! OH NO EVERYONES COPYING THE WALTONS!.....ARGH.........!
i have a double barrelled name because i got married n took on my hubbys name but i was the last in my family with my maiden name so i kept it ,,
Because they are proud of their family name and do not want to lose it due to marriage.
Yeah i noticed that 2. I thinks its women who would still like to have their maiden identity held within marriage. Years ago, it was mainly when two extremely wealthy families married, (usually for money and prestige) that both names would be linked for social reasons. I think its both now, snobbery and women power.
One reason I thought of is networking purposes. With more women filling management positions, along with marrying later in life, they have established a reputation under their maiden name, and don't want to confuse people with a new last name. Some women carry it until colleagues are familiar with the new last name, then drop the maiden name.
Quite a few of my friends have double barrel names....
Most of them have chosen to do this so they can keep the same surname as their children but still take on their new husbands name. If in the future i decide to get married then I'm afraid i will be yet another person to do so. I am proud of my family name and its heritage and don't want to loose it.
No i don't think it is a form of snobbery.
I think some couples do it to show the relationship as fair and equal instead of how it was in the past where the man was in charge of the household.
Also, a woman can want to carry on her family name in some way if there are no men in the family who could carry it on.
