What is the procedure for a foreigner getting married to a local in Kazakhstan?
Question: I currently work in Kazakhstan on a 6 weeks on 2 weeks off rotation. I live in the UK. (however, I am not a British citizen - yet). I have met a girl that I am considering to marry but are unsure of what the procedure is.
Answers: hey, there!
legal procedures to register a marriage won't be any different for a foreigner than that for a local national. you and your fiance should file an application with the local ZAGS (civil affairs registrar), wait for the grace period (one month) and come to ZAGS again to confirm that your intentions withstood the test of time. that's when the ZAGS will issue you the marriage certificate. Kazakhstan is signatory to several international treaties and recognizes foreign marriage certificates and vice versa, so your Kaz certificate should be valid in the UK (you may need to obtain apostile stamp on your marriage certificate though).
I also suggest that your spouse checks free legal advice forum on www.zakon.kz. She could ask this question and receive free advice from actual practicing lawyers. Some of them may practice family law and may have practical experience in handling this type of work (because you are not the first one). She also can ask if apostille stamp is necessary.
Of what nation ARE you a citizen? This situation you describe is, legally, a fairly complex one and I am betting that your legal country of origin's embassy would be the place to start. Amazing the places in which one finds love, isn't it?
Good luck.
